Sounds, voices and music
Working with MIDI controllers, synthesizers, voice samples and recorded sound, Trio Wellenbad play waves of atmospheric drones and gentle rhythms via a spatial sound system. While performing, the trio is positioned in front of a specially produced video projection. A particular feature are three distance measuring sensors that the trio can control with their hand movements. For this, IWW employee Kristian Brodersen converted ultrasonic sensors, which normally measure water levels, into a kind of theremin. The 20-member, four-part ensemble of the Collegium Musicum Aachen under the direction of Tobias Haussig presented baroque and contemporary works by John Cage and Monteverdi, among others.
Concerts and research
The concert installation meanders between an exhibition character and changing stages for the choir, scientists and the trio. The light intuitively guides the audience to the various stations. In addition to the musical performers, the flumes themselves, meter-long experimental installations for producing artificial waves and flooding situations, are the main protagonists of the evening. The channels are repeatedly activated, explained, staged and themselves become the subject of discussion. In addition to the three large flumes, there is a fourth, acoustic flume consisting of eight sound channels, inviting to an immersive sound experience. Measuring data that the trio received from the IWW was translated into sound especially for the project.
